Summary/Abstract: A new small fortified site – Jigodin IV - dated to the 1st c. BC - 1st c. AD, was found in the vicinity of Jigodin Băi, near the town of Miercurea Ciuc, Harghita, Romania, in an area where on 1.5 km range, other three larger contemporaneous fortified sites were already known. Arguing for a functional division between the neighbouring fortified sites, the study interprets the new discovery as a fortlet or watch-tower enclosed by a ditch, part of the advanced defensive network of observation points and roads that sustained the military power of Jigodin II fortress, which, in turn, ensured the guard for the larger residential and craft centres from Jigodin I and III. The discovery is significant because it shows that also in the region of eastern Transylvania, like in Orăștie Mountains, the Dacians tribes occupied and controlled the territory in a complex manner, the military logic being mainly adjusted to the best naturally suited corridors for circulation through the landscape.
