Summary/Abstract: This paper presents Dmitry Likhachov’s concept of culture. Likhachov (1906-1999) was one of themost outstanding Russian scholars researching Russian literature and culture. According to thescholar, Russian culture is very much connected with the culture of Western Europe. He points tothe influence of North and South Europe on Russia’s culture. Likhachov also argues that the conceptof culture should be defined broadly and that culture should be perceived as a homogeneous sphere(all components of culture are connected with each other). Furthermore, the scholar points to thethreats that can influence the degradation of culture.By presenting his concept of culture, Likhachov makes a contribution to the discussion about inwhich direction, when it comes to development, Russia should go after the collapse of the USSR.Doing this, Likhachov reveals his world view. He draws on the Westernizers’ tradition, emphasizesthe role of individualism and opposes Eurasianism. Thus, the concept of culture the scholarpresents points to the civilization of the Western countries which are shown as an example tofollow as for socio-political changes. Likhachov tries to convince people that Russia has alwaysbeen part of Europe.
