MAPPED APPELLATIVE TOPONYMS OF THE VOLGA RIVER FAIRWAY: ITS STRUCTURE AND PRINCIPLES OF NOMINATION

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the nomenclature of the Volga toponyms of two chronic profiles – the end of the 19th and the beginning of the20th centuries. The main sources of the study were the maps of the Volga River fairway of the 1896–1900 and the Atlas of the unifieddeep water system of the European part of Russia. The names revealed in the Kostroma part of the Volga fairway are analyzed. Basicallyit place names, having in its composition geographical term. Determines their value, a correlation with the dialect vocabulary.In the article the basic toponymic model. The basic toponymical model for the studied object is presented. Toponymical models ofthe Volga river fairway are analyzed, their meanings are determined, and their relationships to the local dialect are retraced. The studyshows that Kostroma’s names of the Volga river fairway can be viewed as an illustration of the system reflecting the toponymicalspace of the Volga river. The system was formed by the beginning of the 20th century. At the same time, the system reflects characteristicfeatures of the nomenclature of geographical lexis in Kostroma dialects.
