Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the paper essential restrictions on the semantic operation of grading in Polish are discussed. Next, the adjectives of addressing as a class of language units are delimitated and described from the point of view of the grading category. The main part of the paper presents a detailed semantic and syntactic analysis of the adjective drogi in Polish. The sequence drogi represents two homonymic units. The first one means ‘expensive’ and it is gradable, the second one means ‘dear’ and it is not gradable. Finally, the following hypothesis is substantiated: a form najdroższy resembles the superlative form of the adjective drogi ‘dear’, however it is in fact separate language unit that belongs to the class of the addressatives.
