Women and men village representatives about their roles and motives for performing the function in chosen rural communities

Summary/Abstract: In year 1958 the percentage of female village representatives was only 0.8%, whilst in the year 2011 the share of women among all village representatives had risen to 34.7%. This provokes a question concerning the reasons that more frequently rural women are fulfilling the role of village representatives and also their motivations for doing so. In order to answer this the changing character of the function itself as well as women’s life aspirations should be investigated. Today, the function of village representative is perceived as marginalized and it doesn’t provide formal power or significant material benefits being, at the same time, there are increasing social expectations. As a consequence men seem to be less interested in performing this function, and the role becomes more available for women. Additionally, especially in case of women the activity as a village representative compensates other limitations and unsatisfied aspirations related to other aspects of rural life. W 1958 roku udział kobiet wśród sołtysów wynosił tylko 0,8%, podczas gdy w 2011 roku analogiczny odsetek osiągnął 34,7%. Prowokuje to pytania, dlaczego kobiety obecnie częściej zostają sołtysami oraz jakie są motywacje mieszkanek wsi towarzyszące tego rodzaju aktywności. Odpowiedzi należy poszukiwać zarówno w zmianach roli sołtysa, jak i aspiracjach samych kobiet. Pozycja sołtysa jest współcześnie postrzegana jako marginalizowana, niezapewniająca formalnej władzy czy wymiernych korzyści materialnych i jednocześnie poddawana rosnącym oczekiwaniom społecznym. Sprawia to, że cieszy się ona mniejszym zainteresowaniem ze strony mężczyzn i tym samym staje się bardziej dostępna dla kobiet. Szczególnie w przypadku kobiet pozycja sołtysa kompensuje ograniczenie aktywności oraz niezrealizowane aspiracje dotyczące innych dziedzin życia.
