The Pilgrimage as Context and Vital Structure of the Miraculous Icons

Summary/Abstract: Among the most popular cults of images are those inspired by the icons of the Virgin Mary, most widely found in the Orthodox and Catholic worlds. The article seeks to specify the broad span of contextual meanings dealing with these problems: 1. The establishment of the cult of the miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary and the formatting of its religious and cultural traditions; 2. Circulation and ritualized behavior of pilgrims; religious tourism - the popular usage of the new religious imagery; the strategies and "hidden contradictions" of this religious tourism; 3. The role of the miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary in the religious procession - the textual base and contextual reality; the hierarchy of the (pattern of the miraculous images; interpretative frameworks; The comparative analysis clearly indicates an ability to simultaneously consider a variety of interpretations of the cult to the Virgin Mary as signifier of sacrality and the inverting of the icons in a new context of alternative readings.
