Summary/Abstract: Important segment of the activities of the Roma NGO sector in Central, South-East¬ern and Eastern Europe is the preservation and development of Roma music and dance traditions through the creation of different music ensembles and schools. In many cases to indicate the community the term ‘Roma’ is used, considering it as politically correct, but when the music is presented the adjective used is ‘Gypsy’. The article analyses Roma aspirations for construction of universal standard of “Real Gypsy music”, how it is placed in the repertoire and stage costumes and in which extent it enters and influences the life of the Roma themselves.
