Summary/Abstract: This is an analytic and historiographic interpretation of the foundation and development of the Department of German Philology at the University of Zagreb. Using materials from the archive of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb as well as secondary literature, the article reconstructs the first thirty years of teaching German at the University of Zagreb. In so doing, it draws attention to the historical and social context in Zagreb, Kingdom of Croatia under the Habsburgs and the Habsburg Monarchy.
