On the History and Contemporary Relevance of the Sociology of Literature

Summary/Abstract: The sociology of literature is not a discipline in its own right, but rather an act of questioning the relationship between literature and society. As such, it underwent a discontinuous development that was facilitated only by the advent of transdisciplinarity. One of the best examples of this research paradigm was the Zagreb school. This article represents the Zagreb school as a paradigm-oriented research group which not only reflected upon and facilitated the development of the sociology of literature by refusing text immanence and reinforcing the shift to cultural studies, but also advanced a genuinely problem-oriented understanding of the paradigm, aimed specifically at the modern period and the historical change in literary forms.
