Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses two related issues. Firstly, the attributes of the Lodz methodological school are presented, which confirm that the group of cooperating scientists who gathered around Zygmunt Gostkowski and Jan Lutyński could be considered a scientific school. In the course of the paper definitional features of scientific schools (genealogy, time, place, self-awareness, unity of general views, i.e. core ideas and core methodology, and papers, style and world view) characterizing the Lodz methodological school are discussed, and it is proved that the group of researchers-methodologists discussed are endowed with the majority of those features. The second part of the article analyzes the process and status of collected materials which will serve as the basis for writing a biography of this scientific school. It examines a range of epistemological, methodological and ethical dilemmas encountered by sociologists who intend to write a biography of their scientific community, other scientists, influential academics, and masters. It also analyzes the status of existing and generated sources of information concerning the Lodz methodological school; the role, place and impact of the sociologist-biographer and their obligations towards the heroes under consideration, informers providing materials, as well as readers – receivers of the biography.
