On the Influence of the Economic and Political Crisis on Migration Patterns of Gorani People and Changes to Their Culture

Summary/Abstract: Migration from the Gora region has always been galvanized by the economic and political situation in Gora and in the wider region. Thus the economic crisis of the 1990s intensified the migration of Gorani people from their region. This was also greatly influenced by the war and political changes in Kosovo during and after 1999. The paper considers and attempts to explain the influence of the economic and political crisis in Serbia and Kosovo at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century on the migrations from the Gora region. At the same time, I will analyse the influence of the crisis and migration on the changes in culture. This I will demonstrate by showing the ways in which, and the extent to which, changes in the use of Gorani speech in the private and public sphere occur and by mapping the changes in the ways the wedding ritual is organized by members of the Gorani community living in Belgrade.
