Summary/Abstract: Weiner’s question “Where do I belong?” refers in general to the Jewish artist’s attempt to define his identity and his relationship to the totality of national culture. The question of Weiner’s Jewish identity opens up a broad spectrum of questions regarding strategies with which “alienation” takes shape in the modern artist. This paper concerns itself with issues such as alienation and the search for identity in Weiner’s work as well as with his relationship with language, which in its abstraction resembles what Deleuze and Guattari (in reference to Kafka) describe as “minor” or “intense” literature, so that the writing process turns into the experience of being a stranger in one’s own language.
