Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the origins, course, expediency, and effectiveness of the economicsanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries. The reasons for these sanctionswere the annexation of Crimea by Russia and its role in the events in Ukraine. The economic sanctions were placed in the broader context of economic diplomacy. The process of evaluation of the sanctions’ effectiveness is very complex and controversial, because the author recalls the assessment and estimates of other authors. Themain conclusion is that the sanctions are rather effective, especially in the long run.
