Summary/Abstract: In modern considerations on leisure time, scientists emphasize the importance of leisure for a proper and balanced human life. Researchersof the subject point out health, recreational, development, educational and sociological benefits of leisure, emphasizing the traps resulting from its misapplication. Children are particularly vulnerable to the misuse of their free time. Firstly, they only get to know the value of time at their disposal and learn how to plan it correctly. By doing so, they develop independent decision-making. Secondly, the children’s leisure time is closely related to the adults’ free time. Most frequently, it is parents who inspire schoolchildren’s choice of leisure time. The article presents the results of studies concerning most frequently chosen leisure time activities of third grade pupils from urban and rural areas. In this respect, attention was drawn to the views expressed by pupils on their attitude to leisure. Third graders’ answers, obtained in the course of the studies, do not give rise for optimism. The vast majority of the children participating in the study, regardless of their place of residence, spend their leisure time passively. Previously popular physical activity, trips, sport, tourism, games and outdoor activities are slowly replaced by more passive leisure time activities. The media development, computers and the Internet, the mobile telephony as well as further, rapid technological advances are the factors which, undoubtedly, have affected human lifestyle. They have all contributed to the change in the way contemporary children spend their leisure time.
