Summary/Abstract: Higher education reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina demands the studies to be organized in three cycles, in accordance to the Bologna principles, for the purpose of achieving integration into a unified academic, science and research space of Europe. The third cycle of studies, i.e. the doctoral studies, is aimed to strengthen research capacities and competition within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). One of the goals of the Bologna Process is the overall increase of the number of doctoral candidates who will take over research careers within the EHEA. The University of Sarajevo is in the phase of defining frames for the third cycle of studies and preparation of the curricula. Sarajevo Faculty of Architecture, which was the first to initiate the new form of studies in accordance to the Bologna principles as a pilot project, had also prepared curricula for the third cycle of studies in 2008/2009. In the course of preparations, the basic curricula frame was developed and certain problems and dilemmas were defined, all related to the different aspects of initiation of the doctoral studies. This report will present the experience and open issues related to initiation of the third cycle of studies – the doctoral studies. Some issues need to be resolved prior to the beginning of the studies, and they include the definition of a clear student frame of the third cycle of studies and the status of doctoral candidates, the way of financing the third cycle, the issue of preserving the program quality and the issue of mobility within the third cycle.
