Summary/Abstract: The article is a critical commentary on the essay "Video: the aesthetics of narcissism" by the American art historian Rosalind Krauss. This acclaimed essay represents an early attempt at theorizing the video image and has been acknowledged as an influential source for contemporary video art explorations. Rosalind Krauss's essay is analyzed in terms of its psychoanalytical background and its connections with modernist art criticism. Its insights are considered with regard to the dominant critical discourse of the 1970s which sought to delineate video s inherent properties and argue for its unique position within the system of visual media. Krauss's conclusions about the immateriality of the electronic image are evaluated in contrast to the specificity of the cinematic apparatus on the one hand and in the context of adjacent art practices on the other. Video, as a time-based medium, is distinguished for its handling of time and duration. Therefore particular emphasis is placed upon the images temporality Krauss's text is referred to video art's performative aspect and the corresponding strategies adopted by artists in order to pose questions about their self-identity and corporeality. The analysis is supported by examples both from Bulgarian and international art scene and possible parallels are drawn out.
