Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to Jan Barszczewski, a little-known Polish poet and novelist. The main subject of this paper are short stories collected in the volume Szlachcic Zawalnia. All his life Barszczewski was very interested in Belorussian culture and tradition. In his works he transformed the most popular motifs of Belorussian folk literature and tried to present them as gothic stories. The author of Jan Barszczewski and His Surroundings does not agree with the opinions of some of the reviewers challenging the artistic values of Szlachcic Zawalnia. The article is also an attempt at defining Jan Barszczewski’s place in Polish literature.
