Summary/Abstract: The situation of the literary genre of the essay has changed in the 20th centrury and continues to change along with the conception oif culture. Two representative anthologies offer an extensive survey of the German and Hungarian essay tradition, "'Der Kanon'. Die deutsche Literatur. Essays" (Suhrkamp/Insel), and "A magyar esszé antológiája" (Osiris Klasszikusok), respectively. The two anthologies offer an excellent starting point for the discussion of the current situation of this literary genre.
