Summary/Abstract: Biblical readings present in the “ceremony of holy matrimony” are filled with God’s design of matrimony and thus help to show God’s true greatness and dignity. The significance of biblical readings present in the matrimonial ritual is great indeed. Several topics which should form the content of a matrimonial homily, depending on the existential and spiritual advancement of listeners, can be distinguished. These are: unity and inseparability of husband and wife; blessing and fertility; biblical models of holy matrimony, beauty of marital love; matrimony and covenant: Christ as the foundation of holy matrimony; married couples as a testimony to God’s great love. The central topic is the relation between covenant and holy matrimony. Holy matrimony is the symbol of the New Covenant expressed in the sacrifice of Christ. Holy matrimony enables a couple to love each other in the same way as Christ loved the Church. The homily should inform a couple about this great mystery. It should be remembered that this kind of homily cannot just be an explanation of a sacramental meaning of Christian holy matrimony. Its chief aim is to introduce candidates for matrimony into the redeeming event which takes place “here and now”.
