An Overview of the English Influence on the Romanian Medical Language

Summary/Abstract: Based upon the theoretical research on the concept of cross-linguistic influence, the present study highlights the general aspects of English influence on Romanian in the scientific field of medicine. Especially at the lexico-semantic level, the analysis is pursued first diachronically, with focus on the advent of English as an international language not only in medicine, but also in science and technology, and finally synchronically, providing a short list of neological medical Anglicisms. The study ends with the distinction to be made between lexical and semantic borrowings, illustrating it by giving some examples of Romanian medical calques of English expressions.
