Summary/Abstract: In a society marke:d by the presence of divinity in daily life, the foundation of a religious establishment held deep significance. In essence, it was believed that such an act would trigger God's proteetion and benevolenee during lifetime, and the forgiveness of all sins and redemption atler death. To a Prinee, the founding of a religious establishment was an aet of gratitude for his station in life as al chosen; a means conveying legitimaey and inseribing the founder in the long line of Bizantine Emperors, Serbian and Bulgarian Tsars, and "old" Prinees ofthe land; a source ofprestige to himself, and ofinspiration to society. In the line of the old tradition, the Wallachian Princes of-the second half of the seventeenth century spared no efforts in the founding of religious establishments, with a diligence never to be matched subsequently.
