Summary/Abstract: Reform and changes made to the education system in the recent years are centered on students, and they are also involving changes to the methods of evaluation of their efforts for their own training. Teachers use alternative assessment methods increasingly often, and the most preferred is the portfolio. The article examines the conditions that such an approach must meet to be classified in this category of assessment methods that measure student's effort not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively; the student becomes subject of his/her own training, and is involved in the continuous and profound assessment. Despite using a non-standard method, with an important subjective component, especially related to the teacher, the portfolio remains an alternative method of evaluation and, when applied correctly, it has increased the quality of education process. The theoretical part of this study was supplemented with a few suggestions for the implementation at IV-th grade History classes, considering that the development of the operations of thinking at this age allows children to achieve a portfolio approach, contributing to the training of skills that are set out for this discipline. The proposals are related to the themes "My Family", "European Union" and "Culture and heritage in Romania".
