Quality Standards in Preschool Teacher Education

Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at informing the wider academic community on the recently published Standards of Quality in Pre-School Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and their possible role in the process of education of professionals, teachers and pedagogues, in higher education institutions, with particular emphasis on education of pre-school teachers. A year ago, the Agency for Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina (APOSO), supported by governmental and NGO sector dealing with education and upbringing, launched some significant activities related to improving the quality of teaching in pre-school education. One-year efforts of numerous experts from practice and representatives of higher education institutions in BiH resulted in publishing of Standards of quality of work of teachers, pedagogues and principals in pre-school education and upbringing. Some of the conclusions adopted at the recently held Conference in Sarajevo devoted to quality in pre-school education concern the application of the Standards of Quality in higher education institutions. To this end, Standards of Quality in Pre-School Education have been recognised as a document that can play a significant role in innovation of curricula for training of professionals, particularly in the segment of contents selection and defining the learning outcomes, which have to meet the needs of profession. Additionally, these standards provide great opportunities for locomotion and development of scientific and research practice in higher education institutions, with the goal to generate new scientific findings that would highly contribute to further advancement of pre-school education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
