Summary/Abstract: Peter HÄRTLING’s collection of texts, entitled Der Wanderer, ought first to be read against the backdrop of the author's experiences of fleeing at the end of World War II. Beyond the autobiographical dimension, however, there is a wide-ranging intertextuality, through which the complexity of the wanderer as a character is both explored and rooted in the European Geistesgeschichte (history of ideas), in relation to which it has epochal significance. It is therefore justified, that this article interprets this collection of texts not just autobiographically but also poetologically.
