Summary/Abstract: The development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region is significantly impacted by their ability to build proper relations with stakeholders. These entities are increasingly eager to use different forms of cooperation with external partners, which enables, among others, access to knowledge and otherwise unattainable resources as well as joint projects and investments. The paper aims to identify the determinants of the development of cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in the region based on the example of companies in the Łódzkie and Mazowieckie Voivodeships. For this purpose, surveys conducted with the use of the CATI method were carried out on a sample of 148 cooperating SMEs. The results confirm that the cooperation: (i) was carried out mainly with trading partners, i.e. suppliers, customers and other businesses, (ii) had a wide range i.e. included in addition to typical business contacts also exchange of knowledge and joint ventures, (iii) was systematic, and (iv) encountered many obstacles, among which the unfavourable economic situation was the most frequently indicated.
