Summary/Abstract: Kaunas winter port was built in 1917, during WWI by the German occupation authorities. Even though the role of the port was changing during the interwar period, it played a special role in the economic and social life of the city. Ships could not only take a rest after the navigation season, but also ship renovation was made, as well as cargo loading and unloading took place. Each year during the navigation season, Kaunas winter port was important not only in Kaunas, but also in the first Lithuanian Republic transportation. The social role of the port was also indisputable as in addition to the port, there were other buildings in the port territory, which provided from 200 to 1000 work places depending on the season. The German occupation power left an unfinished port in Kaunas when it moved away from Lithuania. It can be maintained that the Germans completed only a part of the tasks, which had been planned; they were later completed by the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications and Kaunas city municipality. During more than 20 years, various tasks were carried out in the port: port deepening, building a ship-house, and making roads and embankments in the port territory and port region. The biggest tasks were carried out during 1925–1934, but later they stopped because of lack of resources. In 1934, when the port project was improved, the tasks were carried out in 1935–1938. In the summer of 1938, Kaunas had a modern river port, which was significantly bigger compared to the one in 1919. Unfortunately, both Kaunas residents and the whole Lithuania could not enjoy the port for a long time. The Soviet occupation and the retreating German army destroyed it in 1944
