Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the impacts of civilization development trends at the start of the 21st century, including the globalization. It characterizes the globalization from social, economic, ecological and security aspects and emphasizes its multidimensional and complex character. From the aspect of culture and cultural identity of man the paper highlights the challenges of globalization in relation to knowledge society development. From the aspect of education and research it stresses the authentic mission of Catholic universities in Europe which should reflect, promote and upkeep the search for the truth and the values of Christianity.
