Summary/Abstract: The ancestors of the German speaking community of today in Vişeu de Sus, northern Romania, have been colonized in this region at the end of the 18th and at the beginning of the 19th century, first of all because of their knowledge and skills in forestry in order to exploit the huge woodland, and thus to help enforce the salt-transport to the central parts of the monarchy. Although is was thanks to these colonists that this region has been experiencing a social and economic development, the early life of the colonists was not one that lacked misery, hard work and harshness. The present paper offers insight into these life-conditions of the early colonists, with reference to the conventional framework, that was meant to regulate life and work of the colonists.
