Summary/Abstract: In the article an attempt is made to reconstruct the main features of the phonetic development of the Panevβiðkiai dialect on the basis of place names and personal names recorded between the 16th and 18th centuries. Attention is paid to: the narrowing of long stressed /a:/; the treatment of nasal vowels and diphthongs; the broadening of unstressed /i/, /u/; stress retraction; depalatalisation of /l/ before e-type vowels; lengthening of short stressed vowels; shortening of long unstressed vowels; monophthongisation of /ie/, /uo/, change of fronted unstressed /a/, /u/ to /i/; reduction of /i/, /u/, /e/, /a/ in final syllables; vowel insertion in clusters ending with /l/, /r/, /m/, /n/, /v/.
