Summary/Abstract: Green growth is a relatively new concept, which has appeared in the international discussion as a response to increasing environmental threats and also a potentially effective way to deal with the effects of the recent fi nancial crisis (2007). The aim of the review and partially polemical article is to present the essence of the concept of green growth. This, in the author’s opinion, should initiate a discussion of the issue at the national level. A critique of the Polish translation of the green growth concept begins the theoretical considerations. Next, factors which contributed to the increased interest in this concept are analyzed. The third section reviews defi nitions of green growth and proposes a new approach to the concept. Finally, the basic assumptions of the OECD Green Growth Strategy are presented, which should be the starting point for the formulation of national courses of action in this regard. The paper draws on literature review, comparative and deductive methods to conclude that in conditions the global economic crisis and growing environmental threats, green growth is the only viable compromise between resuming long-term economic growth and improving the quality of the natural environment.
