Summary/Abstract: This article is the first part of a paper that aims to reconstruct the history of the Moldavian monastery of Probota, from its sixteenth-century foundation to the nineteenth-century secularization of its monastic estates. Drawing on the archive material of the monastery, this paper recounts the history of Probota, from 1527 to 1615. The focus of the investigation is not only the monastic life – the monks, the abbots and the events – but also the growth of monastic estates.
