Summary/Abstract: The article undertakes selected issues of the social policy of European countries. The actions undertaken in accordance with this policy are particularly important today due to the profound change in European demography. The article is about population policy that constitutes a fundamental part of social policy. The article focuses on selected demographic problems, including depopulation, the decline in fertility, population aging, their variability in time and space. These are the most significant threats to the population development in European countries. Therefore, it is in these areas of demographic change that population policy should be applied. The paper presents examples of the use of various solutions and population policy instruments aimed at the appropriate development of population processes and reduction of the adverse demographic trends. The expenditure on family policy juxtaposed with the intensity of demographic issues indicates the occurence of the “Apple of Discord” disproportion. The example of Poland and the legal solutions applied in our country has also been included.
