Summary/Abstract: Situational crime prevention is observed to be gaining ground both in Polish literature and in the field of crime control policy. The purpose of this paper is to outline the theoretical foundations of the concept and the social conditions of its establishment and promotion in Poland. In contrast to the positivist tradition in pedagogical thinking, SCP is founded on theories drawing from the Classical School of Criminology. What conditions brought about this renaissance? The answer can be found in the analysis of civilization changes which affected Western countries in the second half of the 20 century, and most notably increased crime rates, fear of crime and critique of correctionalism. The amalgam of these factors paved the way for new, oppressive crime control measures. Similar changes took place in Poland after its social and political transition; this in turn was used to explain why SCP became so widespread
