Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is a comparison of former and contemporary function of the ex libris. In order to achieve this, the author analyzed the 19th century book collection stored in the Church of Our Lady and Saint Bartholomew in Piekary Śląskie, as well as literature on the subject. Based on collected sources, the author also discusses the functions of the ex libris, such as the utilitarian function (determining the owner of the book, protection from loss or theft, artistic decoration), as well as promotional, informational, and universal functions. The possibilities of provenance research of prints in the so-called J.A.N. Ficek library have also been indicated.
