Summary/Abstract: Shadow economy has existed almost always and everywhere. This phenomenon is an important part of the economic life worldwide. However, this phenomenon is detrimental, both economically and socially. This article aims to show the size of shadow economy in Poland and to verify the behavior of young consumers towards this phenomenon. The first part of the paper presents a theoretical reflection on the nature of shadow economy, its size, causes and consequences. In the second part of the paper, there are presented results of the survey on the behavior of young consumers with respect to be engaged in shadow economy activities. This part also defines the role of the informal economy in meeting the needs of young consumers.
