Summary/Abstract: The present article explores with the translation instruments the laboratory created while translating Paolo Mautresing’s La variante di Lüneburg from Italian into Romanian. Our analysis starts by identifying in the text the source of certain structures that belong to specific themes (legends, police novels, chess, esoterism, descriptions, dialogues or soliloquies) that confer the novel a multiple narrative dimension. Each of these themes triggers translation options in accordance with the derived particularities. We will begin by mirroring the incipit of the novel and illustrating the translation options imposed by the legend, then we will examine the translation options for two narrative sequences, the description of a special place (Tabori’s house) and an object impregnated with esoterism (Tabori’s chessboard). Thus the analysis method will mirror and confront some fragments from the original text and the translated one in order to emphasize the most relevant aspects.
