Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to describe Maghreb with the help of a short but illustrative journey through its history and geography and most of all, to identify the place of French language in the context of a plurilingualism that is characteristic for the entire African continent. We have tried to underline that except the contrast of magnificent landscapes and its tumultuous history, Maghreb possesses as well a linguistic richness, “heritage” of colonialism. The singularity of the 6 countries of North Africa dwells in the persistence of Berber dialects, their cultural identity, the Arabic as well as Islam. The linguistic conflict unfolds between the varieties of Arabic and Berber dialects but even so, French enjoys, as we have asserted in this article, a privileged status.
