Summary/Abstract: The recuperation of the Romanian past from the perspective of food behavior represents, inter alia, a means of connecting the Romanian historiography to the European history writing, a necessity which has become imperiously manifest after 1989. Even if in Romania one cannot yet speak of a tradition of this historical genre, studies in this field, although not numerous, have started being published. Historians’ reluctance as for such an approach could be explained by the impediments to cope with, which are not unimportant at all. The lack, for the Romanian territory outside the Carpathians of the 16th – 18th centuries of the primary sources: recipes, recipe books, daily menus or festive dishes, codes of conduct, or the fact that the existing sources are full of lacunae, available in low numbers and disparate are among the most considerable impediments. Still, the little information available, methodically, carefully and critically questioned, corroborated to the results obtained by specialists in other scientific fields, referring here especially to linguists, folklorists and ethnologists, art historians, archeologists, archeozoologists and archeobotanists shall provide undoubtedly at least some of the answers we are looking for as for what and how much and especially when, why, where and which way would Moldavians and Walachians of former times eat.
