Summary/Abstract: Thanks to the development of computer-mediated communication, new forms of communication evolve on the Internet. Gumkowska analyses one of the new forms genre- and communication forms on the net – the meme. Even though its genealogy reaches back into antiquity, the IT revolution of the last few decades has necessitated numerous changes. Instead of permanent genre characteristics we are faced with stuctural fragments of forms that enter into short-lived connections before moving on. Rather than focussing on technological factors, Gumkowska’s analysis is mainly based on the relations that exist within the text and through the text – relations that exist within the framework of the Internet genre. Thee meme as a situational communication form is logo-visual; it relies on irony and is based on situational humour. Not unlike poetry, the meme genre produces the effect of surplus meaning.
