Summary/Abstract: Conquering of Niš (1689) by the Habsburg army affected diplomacy of the Porte. That is especially evident in negotiations it started several months previously in Vienna with members of the Holly League. The research is based on documents held in archives of Vienna and London. Discussed is also situation in Ottoman state presented from the point of view of diplomats accredited by governments having different positions on many issues. This paper is an attempt to assess in a wider context effects this German victory, so far interpreted primarily as a part of military history, had on European events of that dramatic period, for certain contemporary publications suggested it was not negligible.
