On Manipulation in Social Life

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with chosen aspects of manipulation as a technique of rational influencing applied in social life. First of all, the author analyzes the essence and the idea of manipulation as well as ethical aspects of its application on the example of the so-called altruistic, pro-social manipulation. The second part of the article deals with manipulation through situation pressure as well as through legal means. This last issue is illustrated with examples from Polish legal practice of the 1970s. In the final notes, the author outlines the issue of defense against manipulation and the role of knowledge in this defense.
