Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the studies on individuals (and their attitudes) who have received for their accomplishments the Medal for Sacrifice and Courage, awarded in the People’s Republic of Poland by the State Council. The studies were carried out in 1977–1979 by the Institute of Social Prevention and Resocialization with the aim of drawing a sociological profile of a community of the awarded. In fact, they were a separate category of individuals with altruistic, pro-social attitudes, displaying features of positive social deviants. The studies were based on the virtuological concept of civilizational subnormality coined by Florian Znaniecki. It was established who the awarded actually were. The findings concerned their social and demographic profile, their views and attitudes to various values, behaviors and phenomena, and possible divergences of their views and attitudes as compared to the views of people from other social communities.
