Summary/Abstract: The paper concerns some characteristic features of Polish sociology that greatly affect work of Polish social scholars. Polish sociological institutions are derivates of an overbureacratized, yet exceedingly autonomous variant of the classical, German-style university. Probably the essential distinctive attribute of sociology in Poland is its peripheriality. This peripheriality results in a dependent character of social science's development, which in turn fosters orthodox and conservative rather then revolutionary academic strategies. Another important peculiarity of Polish sociology is its limited size, as compared with some leading Western social sciences. Two other peculiarities that affect Polish sociology, are its normativity and unacceptable, exceptionally high level of sociologists' engagement in public affaires.
