Summary/Abstract: The article discusses images of the “modern girl” in Poland in the 1960s in the context of a socialist society that was increasingly open to Western trends. In particular, the popular biweekly Filipinka became a forum for editors and female teenage readers to debate modern lifestyles, and the relationship between young women and an increasingly globalized youth culture. Contested ideas of modern grilhood exemplified larger tensions within the Polish post-Stalinist project where social actors from political elites to ordinary people debated the shape of Polish society in the context of changing definitions of the Cold War, Polish tradition, and the impact of global mass media and consumer culture.
