Summary/Abstract: The paper describes the role the classical philosophy (popularized by Wojciech Chudy, among others) played in the process of the awakening of the Polish society’s subjectivity and in creating the ethos of “Solidarity” in 1980-1981. Philosophia perennis helped people who lived in totalitarian enslavement to “recover” the language, subdued by the ideological “newspeak,” as a means to express the truth they discovered, determine their personal identity, and formulate their beliefs. In addition, the continuing relevance of the perennial philosophy for the understanding of culture, the human being, and the world as an ontological whole, was emphasized. Although particular sciences constitute a valuable source of the knowledge of the world, they do not explain, by definition, the known reality in the light of the ultimate reasons, nor do they address the questions, so important for the human being, of the purpose and the meaning of life. Philosophy, however, is able to and should provide the person with answers to vital questions and thus with a foundation for a coherent and rational worldview.
