Deficiency of air transport infrastructure as a barrier to regional economic development

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is the impact of lack of air transport infrastructure for regional economic development. The typology of the impacts generated by airports, used by the Airport Council International, including non-direct catalytic effect, has been used for analyzing links between the development of the infrastructure and the economic situation. Therefore, to compare the model impact of airports with the actual situation of Polish voivodeships the data referring to the dynamics of GDP growth in regions were used. The analysis revealed not only a higher level of economic development and a faster growth rate of GDP in areas well equipped with air transport infrastructure, but also a significant positive change in the situation in the regions where the opening or substantial modernization of the airport have taken place in the recent years, and the quantity of aviation transport is relatively small.
