Summary/Abstract: The article examines the problems of end-of-life decision making related to the advance directives for medical treatment and care of patients, to surrogate decisions, and to decisions made by medical professionals for patients unable to consent. The article outlines some major issues in the contemporary debate on the previously expressed will of the patient and the respect for the so-called ‘precedent’ autonomy. The main arguments for, and objections against, the implementation of the advance directives are analyzed. Some important considerations are emphasized concerning the previously expressed will of the patient, the limits of autonomy, and care, in reference to ethics of practice and the legal regulations.
