Summary/Abstract: The problem of euthanasia has been for a long time a topic of controversial discussions in Europe and America. The clash of arguments in the debates reveals conflicting value positions difficult to reconcile. The problem has become a political one. It could not be viewed separately from another set of complex questions related to the contemporary medical practice and the medical care available for the dying person, to the development of palliative medicine and the access to hospice care, as well as from questions of human relationships and the resources of a social morality. Practicing active euthanasia is a serious challenge to the understanding of the deontology of medical profession and medical ethics. The article examines the problems connected to the precise definition of euthanasia and the adopted divisions, the arguments for and against the justification and the legalization of the active voluntary euthanasia. It gives also an overview of a discussion on this issue with regard to the Health Bill from 2004 which bans euthanasia in Bulgaria without introducing important for the practice differentiations.
