Summary/Abstract: The Carpathian-Danube area was during the late phase of the First Iron Age already complexly populated. In the southernmost part of the Carpathian Basin and the adjoining part of the Balkan peninsula different cultural manifestations developed during the early La Tène period from a substrate of different population groups. Our present knowledge about the substrate population is vague and that is why one of the aims of the study is to try to establish an archaeological picture of the communities in the zone of „Belgrade’s confluence“ who made the earliest contacts with La Tène world and who consequently awaited the Celtic arrival. Another aim is to define types of archaeological testimony to contacts of different nature. Some of the early finds suggest an indirect influence of La Tène style, or a technology transfer, although the model of direct contacts indicated by presence of imported objects should be taken into consideration, too. End of the 4th century BC should be accepted as the time of evident physical presence of the Celtic newcomers in the region. Finally, the study is aiming to find a possible solution for the question from which part of the Celtic world the first impetus came to the Balkano-Danubian populations to embrace achievements of La Tène culture.
