Summary/Abstract: Education by media is understood as a set of educational activities that aim to form the personality of a receiver. Dispositions of media to execute educational function are compared with institutionalised education. The importance of parental mediation with regard to the educational influence of media is stressed. Education procedures employed by media are linked to the social learning, which is performed by imitation of patterns conveyed by media. We introduce the instances of media conducting positive educational role and also hindrances related to the full performance of this positive role. Mass media have many possibilities – dispositions and indispositions – that allow them to participate in education and formation of a receiver. They are able to support forming of the attitudes which are appropriate and useful for the personal development of a receiver. We pay more attention to positive attitudes, e.g. tolerance, but also to negative ones, e.g. manipulation or propaganda. The examples of educational function are published in the closing part of the paper. We mention programme for children, teachers and parents Ovce.sk and media project Občania pre demokracie (Citizens for democracy), which was introduced by LOToS – the association of local televisions of Slovakia, in the year 2014. It is an example of educational function of local media in the important and complicated topics, which is focused on adults.
